John 13:34–35 (NIV84)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
I am learning that love is a life long lesson.
I am learning that love is a hard life long lesson.
I am learning that love is a hard life long lesson with a standard that is not humanly possible.
I have made the mistake of allowing “the best I can” to be the extent that I’m willing to love. I have “settled” because I know it’s hard to love and it takes a great deal of effort. The best I could was good enough. Mediocre. After all, who’s perfect right?
Then I find this passage in Corinthians
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV84)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
I’ve settled because I didn’t take this passage seriously.
Jesus displayed a depth of love that had never been witnessed or experienced in the natural world. His love was…supernatural.
He has made me a “new creature” that makes it capable to love others as He loves me, like He loves you.
The way people know if I’m actually His is by my display of this love…that I’m incapable of expressing until I am transformed by the renewing of my mind.
Romans 12:2 (NIV84)
2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
This means I don’t have to walk around trying to prove I’m a “Christian” with my words, arguments or wisdom. It’s me allowing Him to love through me that makes it clear and unarguably true.
My effort is useless, he uses my obedience and submission to Him living His life through me.
