John 14:21 is a powerful statement that Jesus made.
John 14:21 (NIV84)
21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”
If you notice Jesus is making the statement, “having my commands isn’t enough.” Jesus is clear that obeying Him is what allows us to bear witness to Him. Having knowledge is not experiencing Jesus.
I am developing an increasing awareness of how the right information is not belief. I grew up in a good Christian home in churches with solid biblical teaching. I was well informed and equipped with good intentions. I was able to display proper behavior.
I was well informed. However, I had never really experienced Jesus.
John 14:21 makes it painstakingly clear that one must develop the courage to put in to action of “follow” Jesus is the only way to experience Him.
I know many well informed people. People that love the idea of Jesus. People that are hopeful and have a sincere desire for redemption from their sin. People that recognize that they are in spiritual poverty (think the Beatitudes) and that there is no hope for them on their own. You may be one of those people.
Resolve the courage to obey the knowledge that you have acquired. Muster the courage to take the step from well informed to devoted follower. It will come in spurts. Your steps will be shaky. But I promise you that when you fall, you will fall and see the dusty feet of your Savior and when you look up He will be smiling with a hand stretched out. His voice soothing and encouraging as He says, “Let’s try that again, shall we?”
