43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers,i what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 5
As a follower, I am protected from evil, but protection does not mean that evil has no impact upon me. I’m promised that evil will not destroy the bond that God has provided between He and I through His love, His sacrifice and His jealousy for me.

What happens in this world effects me.
Because what is happening in the world I live impacts me. It challenges my faith.

As a follower, my feelings can’t be the guide I rely upon. As a follower I must look to my teacher and find what He teaches is the response. I must accept that my creator, teacher and King of eternity has the answer.

How does a follower respond to a young man with blatant hatred that enters a church Bible study and kills nine Christians in South Carolina?
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Is this easy? Not a bit! And that my fellow travelers is the reason we must come to the realization that Jesus didn’t just want to save us from sin, He wants to transform us into sons and daughters that loves with His love.

That is the reason the Holy Spirit is gifted to us through faith. Our faith is manifested through obedience.

Love your enemies…but realize you will never be able to do that through your own will or power. You can only love your enemies by submitting to the invitation to follow Jesus and surrender your desires to His transformation.
Dylan Roof is a human, created in the image of the Holy God. He is precious to my God, our Maker, my King.
Join me as I pray for justice and release my desire for vengeance but join me also in asking Jesus to teach me how to love Dylan Roof.
